Family Tax Benefit Part A — estimate and claim checklist

Your children, your family income, the estimate and what to have ready before you claim

Family: [YOUR NAME(S)]

Financial year: [FINANCIAL YEAR, E.G. 2026–27]

Who can get it

A dependent child aged 15 or younger, or a full-time secondary student aged 16 to 19 who isn't getting a pension, payment or benefit like Youth Allowance.

You care for the child at least 35% of the time.

Your family meets the income test.

Our estimate

Line Amount

Family adjusted taxable income A$ [AMOUNT]

Maximum rate for our children, a year A$ [AMOUNT]

After the income test, a year A$ [AMOUNT]

A fortnight A$ [AMOUNT]

Supplement after year end (up to) A$ [AMOUNT]

How it is worked out: the maximum rate per child ($235.48 a fortnight for 0–12, $306.46 for 13–15 or 16–19 in secondary study) is reduced by 20 cents for each dollar of family income over $69,131, but not below the base rate ($75.60 per child); over $123,078 it reduces by 30 cents in the dollar until nil.

Have this ready before you claim

☐ Tax file numbers for you and your partner

☐ Your family income estimate for this financial year (both partners)

☐ Each child's birth certificate or proof of identity

☐ Child care arrangements: how many nights each child is in your care

☐ Bank details for the payment

☐ Child support details, if a child is from a past relationship (Maintenance Action Test)

☐ Immunisation up to date, and the Healthy Start for School check for 4-year-olds

How we want to be paid

☐ Fortnightly, based on our income estimate

☐ As a lump sum after the end of the financial year (claim after we know our actual income)

After the end of the financial year

Centrelink compares our estimate with our actual income (balancing).

We both lodge a tax return, or tell Centrelink we don't need to.

Too little paid — we get a top-up; too much — it's a debt to repay.

[NOTE]

Rates and income test: Services Australia, «FTB Part A payment rates» and «Income test for FTB Part A», read 21 October 2026. A yearly amount is the fortnightly rate × 365 ÷ 14. An estimate only — it leaves out shared care, Rent Assistance, Energy Supplement, child support and FTB Part B. Centrelink decides the real amount.
