What the law says

Gratuity is due to an employee who has completed one full year of service or more: at least three weeks' wage for each year, and part years in proportion (Article 54).

It is based on the last basic wage, not the wage with allowances; annual leave pay uses the basic wage too (Articles 54 and 72).

The employer may deduct from the gratuity any amounts the employee owes them (Article 54).

Notice after probation: one month in the first two years of service, two months after that (Article 49).

Dismissal without gratuity is only allowed in the ten cases listed in Article 61.

Annual leave: at least three weeks with under five years' service, four weeks from five years (Article 79).

Request for end of service dues

Attn: Human Resources Manager

Dear Sir/Madam,

I, [EMPLOYEE NAME], QID [QID NUMBER], worked for you as [JOB TITLE] from [START DATE] to [END DATE]. Please pay my end of service dues under Article 54 of Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 and give me a written statement showing my last basic wage, length of service, how the gratuity was calculated, the leave balance pay and any other amounts paid or deducted.

By my attached calculation, my end of service gratuity is QAR [AMOUNT]. Please explain any difference.

I would also be grateful for a service certificate under Article 53 of the Law.

Yours faithfully,

Before you rely on it

Ask your employer for a written final settlement statement and compare it with this calculation.

Check that it uses your last basic wage as shown in your contract and payslips.

If your contract gives more than three weeks per year, enter the contract figure.

Ask for your service certificate (Article 53) and your return ticket at the employer's expense (Article 57).

If you disagree: file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour for an amicable settlement, then the Labour Dispute Settlement Committee.

An estimate, not legal advice. Disputes go to the Ministry of Labour and the Labour Dispute Settlement Committee.
